US drops largest non-nuclear bomb on Islamic State in Afghanistan

A 21,000-pound non-nuclear bomb, known as ‘mother of all bombs’  was dropped on an ISIS tunnel complex in eastern Afghanistan by the U.S. military.

11The Massive Ordnance Air Blast(MOAB) was first tested in 2003 but has never been used in a conflict until yesterday.  The bomb explodes in air, creating pressure high enough to collapse structures including tunnels.  It serves to soften up the enemy and weaken both its infrastructure and morale, before an aggressive showdown.

“As [ISIS’] losses have mounted, they are using IEDs, bunkers and tunnels to thicken their defense,” Gen. John Nicholson, commander of U.S. forces in Afghanistan, said in a statement. “This is the right munition to reduce these obstacles and maintain the momentum of our offensive against [ISIS].”

The bomb had been transported to Afghanistan some time back ‘for potential use’.

President Trump told media “this was another successful mission”.

36 persons including 20 Malayalis from India are believed to have been killed in the attack.
