Nailed ! Former CBI Director Ranjit Sinha Booked for Corruption

Former director of  Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) Ranjit Sinha  has been booked by the very agency headed, for misusing his official position to influence probe into coal scam case.

A First Information Report (FIR)  has been filed on Tuesday and charges include section — 13 (2), for “criminal misconduct” and section 13 (1) (d), pertaining to abusing official position while holding a public office and indulging in corruption, of the Prevention of Corruption (PC) Act .

Under instructions from Supreme Court, a special investigation team (SIT) was formed  to look into prima facie charges against Sinha. The team comprising former special director of CBI, examined the visitors’ diary at Sinha’s official residence. IT revealed how several coal scam accused persons visited his house on regular basis.

On 14 May 2015 the Supreme Court in its ruling had observed  “it was completely inappropriate for Sinha to have met persons accused in the coal block allocation cases without the investigating officer being present or without the investigating team being present”.

“Colgate” as the  coal allocation scam came to be known,   had engulfed the UPA government in 2012 after the CAG accused the government of allocating 194 coal blocks to in a flawed manner between 2004 and 2009.

This is the second time that a former CBI director, facing criminal allegations, will be probed by the agency itself.

Earlier Sinha’s predecessor A P Singh was booked on corruption charges for dealings with a meat exporter during his tenure between 2010 – 2012.

Interestingly Sinha took over from there in 2012 and winded  up his career too within two years in 2014, on coming under present probe.

“These are painful developments,” said former CBI director R K Raghavan “Every agency goes through a phase of turmoil and I guess this is the CBI’s phase of turmoil. I would call it an aberration on part of the individuals and would urge all to not castigate the whole organisation. ” he added
