Despite ICJ stay, Khulbhushan will live only till he can request clemency, says Pakistan

Pakistan  on Thursday said former Indian Naval Officer Khulbhushan Jadhav, will stay alive only till the date he remains eligible to seek clemency.

Dismissing the significance of stay granted by International Court of Justice(ICJ) stall execution, their Foreign Office spokesperson Nafees Zakaria said “Irrespect of ICJ’s stay, Jadhav will remain alive until he has exhausted the right to request for clemency, initially with COAS(army chief) and later with the President”.

Indian petition at ICJ is purely about consular access, not about ICJ’s rights to act as a Court on an appeal that originates from Pakistan, he said.

According to Pak foreign office , India is using media to colour the case wrong and mislead public.

Pakistan arrested Jadhav from Iran and slapped charges of espionage following which an army court in Islamabad sentenced him to death. India petitioned ICJ that its citizen was denied consular in violation of Vienna Convention provisions and sought to stay the execution. ICJ after listening to lawyers from both counties granted a stay until it arrived at a final verdict
