Govt. to pay off Joy’s loans : Suicide in front of Village Office

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM : Government announced its decision to clear unpaid loans of farmer Joy Kaavilpurayidathil, who hanged himself in front of Village office on June 21, after being harassed by officials there over a long period when he sought regularize his land tax.

The decision came though a cabinet meeting, chaired by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Wednesday.

57-year-old Joy had availed loans amounting to Rs. 13.16 lakh to a co-operative bank in Chakkittapara in Kozhikode apart from education loan of Rs. 3.31 lakh from another bank.

Joy’s death saw widespread protests against village and revenue officials with several instances of denying rightful land owners their due, coming to light
