THIRUVANANTHAPURAM : Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Saturday asked Athletics Federation of India (AFI) to give PU Chitra a wild card entry into World Athletics Championship scheduled next month in London.
Pinarayi also sought intervention by Unions Sports Minister Vijay Gel on the issue.
CM also expressed his resentment over federations take in the matter saying “The stance of the federation is unacceptable.” He cited a parallel to resolve the time bar saying “I believe another athlete(Dutee Chand) was handed wild card yesterday. So Union ministry should intervene on urgent basis to grant Chitra a similar entry.”
Meanwhile Kerala Sports Minister AC Moideen visited the aggrieved athlete’s house at Mundoor in Palakkad and assured state backing for loftier heights.
Chitra said she is hurt but her spirit is strong and would appreciate if Kerala govt. provided her a job that would enable her to pursue sports career.
In an email to sports minister, opposition leader Ramesh Chennithala said does not go well that the federation does not take measures to include Chitra despite High Court order.
PU Chitra won gold in Women’s 1500m event in Asian Athletics Championships but was not selected by IAF for its Indian Squad for IAAD World Championship due to take place in August
