Aadhaar Mandatory to Register Deaths from October 1

NEW DELHI  : Aadhaar card , from October 1, will be necessary to prove identity of the deceased in order to register death with concerned authority.

The aim, said the Registrar General of India(RGI) on Friday, was to block identity-fraud.

In situations where the applicant is not aware of the dead person’s aadhaar or enrollment number, a declaration stating lack of knowledge will do. A false declaration to effect will be taken as offence under Aadhaar Act 2016 and Registration of Birth and Death Act, 1967 and is liable to be punished by imprisonment up to one year and/or fine up to Rs. 25,000.

The provisions come into effect next month for residents of all States except J&K, Assam and Meghalaya, whose dates will be notified separately
