Talwars Acquitted of Daughter Aarushi’s Murder; Benefit of doubt

Allahabad : Dentist couple Nupur and Rajesh Talwar have been acquitted from charges of murdering their daughter Aarushi and domestic help Hemraj in 2008 with the Allahabad High Court emphasizing that it was giving them the benefit of doubt.

The judges said the CBI has been unable to prove Talwars’ guilt. “There is no irresistible conclusion that the accused committed the murders,” the bench said.

The Talwars were in Dasna jail in UP when the acquittal was pronounced and the happy duo repeated “We have got justice”.

Arushi was found dead in her bedroom with throat slit just days before she turned 14.

Their domestic help Hemraj was the main suspect till he was found dead on the roof of Talwar home in Noida.

The case was mishandled by Noida police with lapses like allowing reporters to trample all over the crime scene before it was transferred to CBI.

In 2015 the trial court found Talwars guilty and sentenced them to life in prison against CBI demand for death penalty.

AP Singh who headed CBI investigations said, today’s verdict does not say the Talwars didn’t do it, but there isn’t enough evidence against them.

CBI had held that the twin murder was an inside job as the house had not been broken into the “last seen” principle indictsAarushi Talwars because the victims were in their presence before they were killed.

The police alleged that the Talwars were furious after finding their daughter in a compromising position with Hemraj, but offered no evidence to substantiate that premise.
