Malappuram(KERALA): Indian Union Muslim League(IUML) , Conress-led UDF’s main ally, retained its Assembly seat in Vengara, knocking out its nearest rival CPI_M candidate PP Basheer with a lead of 12,310 votes.
UDF won 65,227 votes while LDF trailed second with 41,917 votes.
BJP candidate K Jayachandran Master secured 5,728 votes while SDPI’s Naseer had to settle with 8,648 votes.
The constituency recorded a 72.12 percentage voter turnout.
The seat fell vacant after sitting MLA Indian Uniion Muslim League’s (IUML) PK Kunhalikutty left to contest another bypoll in Malappuram Lok Sabha constituency, a situation that arose following death of Mallappuram MP E Ahmed from cardiac arrest earlier this year.
People had six candidates to choose from including two independents. Names from the major fronts are IUML’s KNA Khader(UDF), PP Basheer(LDF) and K Janachandran(NDA).
Traditionally, Vengara is a IUML stronghold and has a Muslim-majority population of over 48,000.
Of the 1,70,0009 voters 87,750 are men and 82,259 women
