Luxury car owners found availing free ration; Prosecution measures soon

Thiruvananthapuram : The Civil Supplies Department is mulling to initiate prosecution proceedings against persons who avail free ration alongside owning luxury class cars like Benz and Audi.

Most of these individuals quote false data on their income and assets in the PDS “Priority List”, the department officials said.

Civil Supplies had earlier notified that persons not eligible should voluntarily walk out the priority list which is purely meant for people from very low income bracket.

As the non-eligible and rich find place in the priority list, it denies far more eligible people outside the quota, the officials added.

In Kollam district alone 110 people owning premium cars avail free ration.

Following the discovery, inspection has been extended to other districts.

As per rules, people owning four-wheelers are not entitled for free ration however details supplied to Civil Supplies is self-assessed.

Civil Supplies will seek details of car owners from Motor Vehicles department in a bid to weed out the ineligible.
