Indore : Sister Rani Maria Vattalil, who was stabbed to death 22 years ago in Madhya Pradesh, will be officially proclaimed a Blessed at beatification ceremony in Indore on Saturday.
The nun belonging to Franciscan Clarist Congregation was 41 when Samandar Singh, hired by local landlords, stabbed her inside a bus on Frebruary 25, 1995.
On the fatal day, she was on her way to Kerala – her home state – aboard a bus bound for the capital Indore. The attacker chased her through the crowded bus and stabbed her 44 times.
Samandar later repented his act during his time in jail seeing how the nun’s efforts to alleviate misery had affected the landlords who wished the high-interest lending business to continue unbridled.
Beatification is the penultimate stage in the Catholic Church process for sainthood or canonization of a candidate.
The move to beatify Rani began in 2003 after which she was declared Servant of God in 2007.
Italian Cardinal Anagelo Amato, Perferct of the Vatican Congregation for the Causes of Saints, will preside over the Beautification Mass on Saturday.
Bishop Chacko Thottumarkal of the church in Indore that will serve as venue to beatification said Sr. Rani’s beatification would be a “great blessing “ for the Catholic Church of India, especially central and north India.
It has been learnt that the assassin Samandar is happy about the beatification of Sr. Rani. In remorse he had visited the nun’s ancestral home a couple of years back and cried at her tomb.
