North Korean Soldier Shot by Own Troops as He Defects to South

North Korean soldiers have shot and wounded a fellow soldier as he crossed the heavily guarded border to defect to South Korea, South’s military said.

The attempt is rare but soldiers occasionally try to defect via the Joint Security Area, where border guards of the rival KJoreas stand facing each other just meters away.

The soldier who bolted from a guard post was shot in the shoulder and elbow and was helicoptered to a South Korean hospital ,  said South Defence Ministry.

“Since it was an area exposed to the North, we had to crawl toward there to get him out” it added.

The defection comes at a time of heightened tension over N Korea’s nuclear weapon’s program and could further strain relations.

The soldiers condition and rank is not yet known, the Defence Ministry said.
