Chellanam fishermen call off strike after govt assures sea-wall

Kochi : Fisherfolk at Chellanam called of their strike comprising fasting for a seawall in their area after cyclone Ockhi recently struck its coast.

The District Collector assured the members of the fishing community that the construction of seawall will commence immediately and promised to include the decision in minutes of the meeting held with the protest committee.

Representatives of the agitation said sea wall is only partial relief and that protests will continue if those affected are not rehabilitated satisfactorily.

Cyclone Ockhi that struck Kerala and Tamil Nadu had flooded the coastal village at Chellanam.

The flood waters refused to receded even after the cyclone left for Lakshadweep before recurving to Gujarat.
