New Delhi : The govt today tabled a bill in parliament to make “Triple Talak” – the instant divorce tradition prevalent among Muslims, a criminal offence.
Union Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad, who introduced the bill in the lower house, called this a “historic day”.
Members from RJD, AIMIM, BJD and All Inida Muslim League opposed the bill.
The bill proposes a three-year jail term and fine for any Muslim man who will attempt the now banned practice.
Chief of AIMIM Asaduddin Owaisi remarked the “bill will do injustice to Muslim women” though the reasons behind the argument were not clear.
“We are making history” said Prasad.
Any woman who encounters the triple talak situation can now approach a magistrate and seek “subsistence allowance” for her and her minor children.
The woman can also seek custody of her minor children from the magistrate who will take the final call on the issue.
Triple Talak has been defined as utterance of Talak thrice verbally, in writing or by electronics means such as eMail, SMS or WhatsApp , as illegal or void.
The proposed law will apply to the entire country with exveption of Jammu and Kashmir.
