CBI to probe Sreejev’s death, Sreejith not done with protest yet

After nearly 800 days of protest in front of Kerala Secretariat Sreejith’s demand for CBI probe into alleged custodial death of his brother at hands of police has come through, but he is not over with the protest yet.

On Friday morning, the state got handed over a draft letter of CBI’s willingness to probe the case and former MLA V Sinankutty visited Sreejith at the protest venue to hand over the same.

However, Sreejith and his mother Ramani refuse to end their protest till the probe actually begins.

Another demand of their includes suspension of police personnel responsible for Sreejeev’s death.

“My son’s health has deteriorated after the long protest. But we want justice . We want assurance” Ramani said.

Given it’s overload schedule, CBI had initially refused to accept the case citing it was did not fall in rarest of rare. However the Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan had assured Sreejev’s mother that he would urge the CBI once more.

The case meanwhile caught nation-wide attention and social media uproar too.

The Backdrop
Sreejith’s older brother Sreejeev was taken into custody by Parassala police on allegations of theft. Days later Sreejeev died in a hospital from what police said was suicide.

His family accused torture and custodial death.

Later in 2016, the Police Complaint Authority (PCA) in it’s investigations found the police officials guilty of assaulting Sreejeev.

The PCA report found police version untrue and concluded that Sreejev indeed died of custodial torture.

The probe further foundCircle Inspector Gopakumar and ASI Philipose guilty of thrashing Sreejev before forcing him to drink poison.
