Thomas Isaac Presents Kerala Budget 2018: Live Updates

Finance Minister (FM) Thomas Isaac presents LDF govt’s second budget with focus on job creation and investor friendliness.

The State’s economic review document was tabled in the House showing 35,541 engineering graduates seeking jobs in 2017 as against 30,719 in 2016.

The General work category had 34.62 lakh seeking jobs of which 21.40 are Class 10 educate and 12.17 lakh are graduates.

NRI Welfare (11.45 am)
The budget allocates Rs. 80 crore for NRI welfare programmes. This is in view of the huge remittances that keeps the state economy buoyant, the minister said.

Rs.16 crore will also be shelled out for aid of those in difficult or perilous situations abroad, he added.

KSRTC AID
The Minister said measures to revive Kerala State Road Transport Corporation will be taken on urgent basis.

  • All pension arrears to be cleared by March end
  • 3500 to be sanctioned to KSRTC immediately the fund being loan from consortium if banks. The amount is expected t reduce Rs 60 crore interest per month on present short-term loans.
  • Also KSRTC will buy 2000 new buses using KIIFB funds

Miscellenous (10.45 am)
*   Gas pipeline from GAIL to run through all towns

  • 52 Railway over-bridges to be built.
  • Kozhikode to get mobility hub similar to Vytill in Ernakulam
  • 144 crore for cultural activities
  • 46 crore for Ayurveda education
  • 23 crore for Homepathy studies

SC/ST Allocations  (10. 30 am)
Rs. 2589 crore has been allocated towards empowerment of SC/ST communities. Rs. 150 crore will be assigned to coir industry and Rs. 10  crore for Bamboo industry while Cashew sector will be allocated Rs. 54.45 crore.

Womencare  (10. 15 am)
The budget allocates Rs. 1,267 crores for women’s welfare. A lodging project “She-Lodge” that will house women in transit will open in Kochi. Rs, 50 crore will go into measures required to prevent attacks on women. ASHA workers will be benefited by added Rs. 2000 per month.

Healthcare (09. 50 am)
Malabar Cancer Centre will be upgraded to the status of Regional Cancer Centre(RCC), Isac announced.

Medical Colleges will be ensured more doctors and nurses. District hospital departments will be facilitated to treat heart ailments and Taluk hospitals will have trauma-care centres he said.

An ambulance service on Uber model will launch soon, the minister added.

Rs. 1685 crore has been allocated for public health services.

Project to alleviate hunger to expand (09. 30 am)
The Minister allocated Rs 20 crore for a project to alleviate hunger in urban and rural areas. The scheme is to pattern after Sulemani in Kozhikode and Numma Unnu in Kochi, he said

Coastal Package of Rs. 2000 cr post Ockhi (09.15 am)
The FM has announced package amounting Rs. 2000 crore for coastal areas which will go towards rescue and relief measures including sustained support to households who lose their earners to major disasters
