Mumbai : Singer-composer Papon has run into trouble for allegedly kissing a minor contestant “inappropriately” during a children’s reality show.
While Papon apologized for the act, he blamed the ‘inappropriateness” on faulty camera angles and accident insisting that he did no wrong.
The 41-year-old Assamese singer is a mentor and judge on Voice India Kids along with singers Shaan and Himmesh Reshammiya.
In a livestreamed footage posted on Facebook, Papon is seen smearing Holi colours on a 11-year-old girl, grabbing her face and planting a kiss on her lips after which he is seen turning around and requesting someone to edit the footage.
“I have done it spontaneously but in today’s environment, to touch a girl child however innocent your thoughts are, is not advisable. I am sorry for that,” the singer told after the post kicked up a controversy.
Meanwhile Supreme Court lawyer Runa Bhuyan has filed a complaint with the National Commission for Protection of Children seeking Papon to be booked under Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act(POCSO).
“I am shocked to see the behaviour …the inappropriate kissing, and am seriously concerned about the safety of minors participating in reality shows across India,” she said in her complaint.
Denying sexuality in the act, the singer said “To show affection for a 11-year-old child I have been mentoring is not alien to me” adding “I a wife of 14 years and two young children all of whose lives will be devastated by falsified portrayals”.
The alleged victim’s father meanwhile sided with Papon calling him a “father figure” to his daughter and pleaded with press to stall the controversy.
The police are yet to file a case against him.
