The Paralympic Committee today barred Commonwealth Games 2010 bronze medalist and renowned para swimmer Prasanta Karmakar for three years for recording video of female swimmers during an event in Jaipur last year.
During the swimming championship held between March 31, 2017 to April 3, 2017 Karmakar allegedly handed his camera to one of his associates asking to make videos of female swimmers during the event.
The girls’ parents objected following which the Chairman to Para Swimming Committee stopped the man from shooting. A visibly annoyed Karmakar barged into the Chairman’s office and demanded objections in writing which the parents subsequently submitted.
Karmakar however, refused to delete the videos and agreed to do so only after being detained by the police.
The Press council of India meanwhile directed Haryana Sports dept to invoke strict disciplinary action against him.
Karmakar has is one of the most accomplished para swimmer with 37 medals in the international arena in little over last one decade.
Hi was the coach of India’s Paralympic swimming team for 2016 Rio Paralympics and is the only Indian to have won a medal at the World Swimming Championship(2003).
For illustrious feats that followed he was bestowed Arjuna Award and the Major Dhyan Chand Award in 2015.
