Certification Programme To Make Workplaces Free of Sexual Harassment

A certification programme to ensure freedom from sexual harassment for women at workplaces, has been launched in Gujarat’s Ahmedabad by Gujarat chapter of British Chevening Alumni India.

Chevening is a global scholarship programme of UK govt whose Sexual Abuse Free Environment (SAFE) certification can be availed by any company with more than 10 employees after due registration and compliance.

Noted individuals from the society are selected into SAFE committee that will conduct audit, interviews and surprise checks on the firms that choose certification.

Beginning with Gujarat, Chevening plans to take the programme pan India.

“For us in the UK, this is not a political debate but it is about talent. If you exclude women or make workplace unfavourable for women, you are basically reducing the ability to attract talent tot the organisation. It is important for people to feel safe at workplace” British Deputy High Commissioner to India, Alexander Evans said while launching the certification programme.

“Sexual harassment, as the ingredient at a workplace, makes it toxic, it makes it deeply unpleasant for people to be at the workplace. And particularly, because sometimes it tis done in a private way in the form of bullying or harassment, it can puncture somebody’s confidence” he added.

Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal) Act came into force on Dec 9, 2013. The Act is applicable to any workplace with more than 10 employees. However most companies are yet to implement it.
