New Delhi : Finance Minister Arun Jaitley is likely to undergo kidney transplant on advise of his physicians, according to close circles.
Further, doctors have asked him to stay away from public for fear of infections, a reason why he did not take oath for his new Rajya Sabha term on Tuesday along with other new and returning MPs in the upper house.
Following the diagnosis, Jaitley has virtually withdrawn from all official engagements and is presently working from home.
The minister is soon expected to be moved to the Cardio-Neuro Tower at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences(AIIMS).
If the surgery is to take place, brother of AIIMS director Randeep Guleria, Dr Sandeep Guleria from Apollo hospital will perform the transplant.
Gulerias and Jaitleys are family friends.
There are also talks of flying Jaitley to Singapore for the transplant.
The 65-year-old leader presently holds two portfolios – finance and corporate affairs.
Jaitley suffers from chronic diabetes and underwent bariatric surgery for weight-loss in September 2014. The surgery was successful, but Jaitley resumed work too soon up on discharged and consequently was hospitalized later for “respiratory infection”.
Doctors at that time had noted that his kidneys were doing fine but was moved to AIIMS so as to recover in “complete isolation”.
Why Transplant ?
According to doctors, Jaitley has undergone heart surgery and is severely diabetic limiting his treatment options for his kidneys. Dialysis for long period would add to complications. Hence they recommended transplantation.
