Aadhaar Not Mandatory For Mobile Connection, Says Govt

The Centre has issued directive to telecom companies stating aadhaar was not mandatory and they could accept alternate documents for identity purpose.

Telecom Secretary Aruna Sundararajan has been entrusted for follow-up on the latest decision.

The move comes after Supreme Court rapped the Centre for using its order to seek “mandatory authentication of users” as a “tool” by getting telecom companies to accept aadhaar as the only acceptable proof.

The move will spell relief to NRIs and foreigners visitng the country , the group that does not mostly possess aadhaar.
