Police in Srinagar said a tourist from Tamil Nadu died in a stone-throwing incident in Kashmir when the vehicle he was seated in was targeted by a mob.
The incident took place on Monday morning at Narbal on the outskirts of the capital.
The 22-year-old was moved to a hospital around 10.30 am but slipped into coma and died around 8.30 pm.
The deceased has been identified as R Thirumani from Chennai and was part of a group headed for popular skiing destination Gulmarg.
According to police, stone-throwers attacked the vehicle in which the toourist was seated and one boulder hit his head. A 19-year-old girl from the locality was also injured.
Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti went to the police hospital and met the youth’s parents on being informed of the tragedy.
“My head hangs in shame. It is heartbreaking” she told news agency PTI.
Last week, a child was injured when a crowd pelted stones at a school bus in Shopian in south Kashmir. The bus was carrying more than 50 children including a 4-year-old nursery student.
