Thiruvananthapuram : The DySP who initiated the arrest of the theatre owner who reported child abuse to Childline, has been transferred.
Malappuram DCRB DySP Shaju Varghese has been shifted to headquarters , a move reportedly based on IG report which said the controversial arrest was made without knowledge of superior officers.
Also, govt has issued an order handing over the case to Crime Branch.
The CCTV in Govinda theatre caught well-known businessman Moideenkutty seated in the fairly vacant theatre flanked by a woman and her 10-year-old daughter on either side.
The visuals proceed to show Moideenkutty sexually abusing the child and occasionally getting close to her mother seated on the other side.
The incident took place on April 18.
On 28 April, the theatre owner passed the footage to Childline who informed the police. However, the police refused to act until the images were aired on news media across the state.
Subsequently, Moideenkutty was charged under POCSO and Thrissur Range IG MK Ajith Kumar suspended SI KJ Babby for the unexplained delay.
Curiously, the police arrested the theatre owner Satheeshan on 4 June for not informing the matter to police, a move that sparked huge criticism across the state.
Several well-known names including former DGP TP Senkumar came up with open criticism on the illegal arrest, which he said will prevent an already hesitant public from reporting crimes they chance on.
