Edappal Child Abuse : Crime Branch Finds Police Lapses in Case Handling

Malappuram : The Crime Branch, probing into the sensational case where a known 60-year-old businessman sexually abused a 10-year-old girl, found serious lapses on part of police in handling of the case.

The Crime Branch officials collected information from DySP Shaju Varghese who supervised the first investigation team.

The Lapses
Crime Branch report says though two DySPs separately probed the case, no details were informed or discussed with top police officials.

Also the probe heads did not seek legal advice after detecting the offence.

The Case
The CCTV in Govinda theatre caught wellknown businessman Moideenkutty seated in the fairly vacant theatre flanked by a woman and  her 10-year-old daughter on either side.

The visuals later show Moideenkutty sexually abusing the child and occasionally getting close to her mother seated on the other side.

The incident took place on April 18.

On 28 April, the theatre owner passed the footage to Childline who informed the police. However, the police refused to act until the images were aired on news media across the state.

Subsequently, Moideenkutty was charged under POCSO and Thrissur Range IG MK Ajith Kumar suspbened SI KJ Babby for the unexplained delay.

Curiously, the police arrested the theatre owner Satheeshan  on 4 June for not informing the matter to police, a move that sparked huge criticism across the state.

Incidentally, Shaju Varghese was transferred to police headquarters after he arrested the theatre owner.

Also Sub-Inspector of Changarakulam was arrested allowed and later released on bail for delay in registering the case.
