Heavy flooding hits Kottayam, 10 trains cancelled, more likely

While heavy rains continue to throw life out of gear across the state, Kottayam experiences record flooding since 1994.

Meenachal river with banks burst continues to swell and has flooded railway tracks.

Top railway officials who are camped in the area are taking stock of the situation and will revaluate decision on train schedules  when water recedes.

Disaster management authorities have arrived in several parts of the district. 2500 families were shifted to 105 relief camps. Earlier 12000 evacuees had been put up in various shelters.

Collector headed team comprising sub collectors and Tehsildars are overseeing relief activities in various camps.

Meanwhile 10 trains have been cancelled and authorities say more cancellations are likely if rains continue unabated.

The few trains running via Kottayam are moving at an extremely slow pace
