Karunanidhi Is No More

Dravida legend and five-times chief minister of Tamil Nadu,  Muthuvel Karunanidhi breathed his last in Chennai’s Kauvery Hospital late evening today. The  94-year-old leader was admitted on 27 July following sharp decline in his health condition.

The end according to medical bulletin came around 6.10 pm Tuesday.

Hundreds of supporters who camped outside the hospital for days now have now swelled into a sea of humanity amid heavy security arrangements including riot police deployment in the area.

Also, police took over key installations in the city including Rajaji hall  and cordoned several entry points in the city.

Video footages showed DMK cadres wave their mobiles with flashlights outside the hospital.

Meanwhile, condolences from political leaders and other public figures continue to pour via social media forums.

Kalaignar, as he is fondly known, started his political journey when he was 14 and headed Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and is world’s only leader to have served as party chief for 50 years.

In fact Karunanidhi’s presence is said to be instrumental in the party retaining dravida ideologies the core.

Kalaignar  was also an orator, novel wrter, lyric writer, script and dialogue writer.

He shared political space with veterans such Periyar EV Ramasamy, CN Annadurai, MG Ramachandran and Jayalalithaa.

In early times he spend much of the time competing with MGR and later with Jayalalithaa.

In politics he was an acknowledged strategist and sometimes referred to as India’s Chanakya which is why he could be part of NDA and UPA in quick succession.

Karunanidhi retreated from active politics in 2016 post his tracheotomy surgery, an absence that has cost DMK much according to political observers.

Meanwhile, as per latest reports the mortal remains of the veteran leader will be moved to his residence at Gopalapuram shortly.

The funeral is expected to  take place tomorrow at Marina beach and would be attended by PM Narendra Modi and other national figures including Opposition leader Rahul Gandhi.
