Landslides damage Kakkayam penstock; Danger to 1000 homes

Kozhikode: A massive penstock carrying water to Kuttiyadi Hydroelectric Power Plant from Kakkayam dam lies vulnerable to breakage and submerging over 1000 houses in the valley below.

Recent landslides brought a big mound of earth  upon the 12th block of the penstock, damaging the anchor blocks and loosening the nuts that fortify it.

The incident occurred a week back. KSEB officers, responsible for its maintenance, have not showed up so far however.

The penstock is situated 1000 feet above sea level and access roads to it lie disrupted in recent mud slips.

Hundreds of people in the settlements below live fearful of a possible pipeline collapse that could drown them all.
