Coimbatore Serial Blasts : Man absconding for 20 yrs arrested in Kozhikode

Kozhikode: Crime Branch sleuths of Tamil Nadu arrested a man accused in 1998 Coimbatore serial blast in Kozhikode. The blasts had claimed 58 lives.

The arrested has been identified as 44-year-old NP Noohu alias Manakavu Rasheed, a native of Manakavu in Kozhikode, who evaded cops for 20 years after he fled to Qatar in 1998. The arrest came on the back of “Specific intelligence input”.

The marathon blast
The 1998 blasts took place on  14 Feb, 1998 in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu. 12 bomb went off at 11 places within a radius of 12 kilometers. A total of 58 were killed and over 200 injured .

The bombings followed riots that took place three months earlier, where police gunned down 18 members of a radical Islamist group, in a violent clash between Muslims and the police force.

The blasts were aimed at killing BJP leader LK Advani who was expected to address a rally there the same day.
