A bus carrying 55 passengers fell into a gorge in Teangana leaving at least 43 dead and several injured on Tuesday.
The Telangana State Transport Corporation bus that took off from Jagtiyal picked up passengers from three villages and offloaded several most of them at famous Kondagattu temple at it’s previous halt.
According to survivors, the bus then descended the ghat road but suddenly instead of negotiating a bend, dived straight into the gorge 30 feet below. 23 people died on the spot.
They say the driver shouted “something is wrong” as he tried to brake desperately and passengers screamed in panic as the bus slid without down without control.
Ambulance, fire and rescue personnel rushed to the spot almost immediately after the news broke. Those injured were transported to the civil hospital near by.
The ghat road that plunged the bus was closed for heavy vehicles including buses a year ago after a truck skid off the road killing 20 people.
An alternate road connecting Rajiv Rahadhari Highway to Kondgattu temple served as through fare at that time. It has no hairpin bends or gorges in its stretch.
Govt has meanwhile announced ex-gratia of Rs. 10 lakh to the families of the deceased. Those injured are being treated at costs borne by govt.
