Abhilash Tomy remains sedated, stable, has food, speaks

Kochi : Abhilash Tomy, the solo Indian Navy sailor rescued after being injured and stranded in his yacht off Australian coast, is reportedly stable, said hospital sources.

“No major injures. He’s sedated but seems okay. X-ray reports are not too bad. He has food and is speaking,” a spokesperson at the island hospital said, adding that, further tests are in progress.

Tomy, a Kirti Chakra awardee, was participating in Golden Globe Race, when the mast of his yacht broke rolling in the storm. Tomy sustained spine injury in the incident and send distress message of him unable to move, eat or drink. An Irish co-sailor, Gregor McGuckin, 32, too was injured.

The incident took place about 1900 nautical miles off Perth at west coast of Australia.

Vessels from several nations including Indian Navy boats raced towards the scene, but French fishing boat Osiris was first to find the two men.

INS Satpura is headed to the island and will fetch Tomy back to India, once he recovers enough.
