Road Accidents lessening; Kerala in relief

This year’s statistics show that the number of road accidents in Kerala has dropped dramatically. Although people are stuck amidst the Covid pandemic, it was a relief that the road accidents have become fewer this year.

An overall reduction of 32% in road accidents, 33.5% in fatalities, and 33.6% in injuries was reported in 2020 as compared to 2019, as per the road accident statistics compiled by the Technical Support Group of Kerala Road Safety Authority from data sourced from the State Crime Records Bureau.

Kerala Police department details the report:

  • Total number of accidents in last year-27,877, Deaths-2979, Injuries-30,510
  • Number of accidents this year till april-13,712, Deaths.1423, Injuries-15,347

Previous Year’s reports:

  • 2019 :  Number of  accidents- 41,111, Deaths-4,440, Injuries-46,055 
  • 2018 : Number of accidents- 40,181,Deaths- 4,303, Injuries- 45,458 20
  • 2017: Number accidents- 38470, Deaths-4,131, Injuries-42,671
  • 2016: Number of accidents-39,420, Deaths- 4,287, Injuries-44,108

In 2020, the highest of 3,953 accidents had been reported from Ernakulam district followed by 3,558 in Thiruvananthapuram district, 2,899 in Thrissur, and 2,295 in Kozhikode district. Ernakulam district had 6,282 road accidents, Thiruvananthapuram 5,222, Thrissur 4,462, and Kozhikode district 3,450 road accidents in 2019. The lowest of 461 road accidents in 2020 had been registered in Wayanad district.
