Spanish Football Club Barcelona in on setback as the club couldn’t make a new contract with the football star Lionel Messi before the deadline. Now the Argentina star is free to join any club he wishes.
This is the first time in 7,504 days that Messi is not with the Barcelona club on paper. Talks over a new contract are believed to be ongoing, meaning Messi may well decide to stay at the Nou Camp.
But, for now, he is available for absolutely nothing.
Messi’s most recent contract with the club, signed in 2017, was worth more than 500 million Euros over 4 years, including salary, bonuses, and image rights.
Earlier in the month, La Liga president Javier Tebas had warned Barcelona that they might not be able to register Messi again unless they make cutbacks in other areas.
Last year Messi wanted to leave Barcelona and handed over a transfer request regarding the same. But the club didn’t let the star go.
According to a report in the Spanish newspaper Marca, Barcelona club president Joan Laporta has been trying hard to get Messi back. However, some issues between the player and the club remain unresolved.
The club is already facing some financial distress. Amidst the issues in the club, Messi’s departure will also put the club in a fix.
As he is one of the most recognizable athletes in the world, the club banks on his image to rope in sponsors.
At the moment, Messi is leading Argentina in Copa America and is not linked to any other club.
