Proud moment for Kerala; P R Sreejesh becomes second Malayalee to win Olympic medal

Kerala is now at the peak of pride. PR Sreejesh is making history as the second Malayalee to win a medal from the Tokyo Olympics. Keralites are excited to get the Olympic medal to Kerala in 2021 through Sreejesh.

India goalkeeper PR Sreejesh pulled off a stunning save in the final few seconds of the bronze medal match against Germany at the Tokyo Olympics.

India was leading 5-4 in the match, and if Germany had scored the goal, the match would have been pushed to the shootouts. But Sreejesh denied Germany’s Lukas Windfeder as India celebrated the bronze medal win in Tokyo.

The goalkeeper’s excellence:

The 35-year-old Sreejesh was part of the core of the team that broke India’s 41-year medal drought at the Olympics. 

Born in Kizhakkambalam village in Kerala’s Ernakulam district, Sreejesh trained as a sprinter in his childhood before moving on to long jump and volleyball. He was 12 years old when his coach suggested that he turn his eyes to goalkeeping in hockey.

Sreejesh was the star of India’s run to a gold medal at the 2014 Asian Games in Incheon, South Korea, saving two penalty strokes against Pakistan in the final.

At the 2014 Champions Trophy and 2018 Champions Trophy, he was adjudged “Goalkeeper of the Tournament”. Following impressive performances in 2014, he was nominated for the award of Best Male Goalkeeper; he eventually lost to Jaap Stockmann of the Netherlands.

 He was the captain of the team that won the silver medal at the 2016 men’s Hockey Champions Trophy held in London.

On 13 Jul 2016, Sreejesh was given the responsibilities of the Captain of the Indian hockey team, taking over from Sardar Singh.

At the 2016 Olympics in Rio, Sreejesh led the Indian hockey team to the quarterfinals of the tournament.

PR Sreejesh has been a pillar in the Indian Hockey Team for over a decade.

Footballer IM Vijayan said that Sreejesh is very happy and proud to have won the medal. Sreejesh is the best player in the tournament. IM Vijayan told Twentyfour that Sreejesh had a great performance in all the matches except the one against Australia.

Right from early morning on Thursday, the house of Sreejesh was a crowded one with all glued to the TV.

After the historic win, the entire family celebrated the victory by lighting firecrackers and distributing sweets.

Sreejesh’s wife, Aneesha, an Ayurveda doctor also could not hide her emotions. She said Sreejesh desired to win an Olympic medal.
