World Heart Day 2021; Here’s the history, significance of the day, and the ways to maintain a healthy heart

World Heart Day is observed and celebrated every year on September 29 to give public awareness on cardiovascular diseases, their prevention, and their global impact. According to World Heart Federation, the world’s leading causes of death are heart disease and stroke that claim around 18.6 million lives each year. 

The main aim of the day is to make understand people the harmful causes of tobacco use, unhealthy diet, and other health risks. According to reports, there are 520 million people globally living with cardiovascular disease that have been affected by Covid-19 in the last year.

History

The World Heart Federation and World Health Organisation collaborated together and founded the World Health Day in 1999. Antoni Bayés de Luna, the president of WHF from 1997-2011 first introduced the concept of the annual event. On September 29, the day marked to highlight the actions that a person can take to prevent and control cardiovascular disease.

Theme and Significance

The theme of the World Heart Day 2021 campaign is “Use Heart to Connect.” The theme of the day is ‘harnessing the power of digital health to improve awareness, prevention, and management of CVD globally’. Heart attacks have taken a serious issue and the day reminds every people to be vigilant against heart health problems and warns everyone to take care of one’s body. The also highlights the actions that individuals can take to prevent and control CVD. Apart from this, World leaders in May 2012, pledged to reduce global mortality from non-communicable diseases (NCDs) by 25% by 2025.

Here are some of the ways to maintain a healthy heart:

  1. Eating a healthy diet is the first step that can be taken to prevent heart attacks. Include a lot of vegetables in your daily diet, like bottle gourd, ivy gourd, snake gourd, pumpkin, leafy vegetables, etc. the diet should contain 30% proteins and 10% carbohydrates also. completely removing wheat, fermented foods such as yogurt, alcohol, cheese from your daily diet is also one of the steps.
  1. Get active and Staying at a healthy weight is another way to maintain a good heart.
  1. There are several other ways to control the heart issue to some extent- quit smoking and stay away from secondhand smoke, control your cholesterol and blood pressure, drink alcohol only in moderation, manage stress.
  1. Try bringing a change in lifestyle and walk daily for 30 to 45 minutes, which would improve the heart functions.
