Study warns next Coronavirus could come from Rats

The world is now living with a new normal as the deadly coronavirus reverted the situation. Although we learned to live with the situation, the comfortable old life is still our dream today. Covid-19 has made our view to have a look from a different angle and we have been going through it. 

Although everyone in this world is expecting a decrease in Covid-19 cases, the decline in cases has not yet been marked in all parts of the world. Amidst the surge in cases, a shocking study report has just come out in which the experts warn that animals like rats, squirrels can be carriers of viruses like a corona.

Researchers at Princeton University have conducted a genomic analysis of various mammals, looking specifically at the receptors that bind to SARS viruses. The study was published in ‘PLoS Computational Biology Journal’ which noted that in this way the next epidemic could come from rats. 

The report said, SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes Covid-19 infection might have occured from a non-human animal to humans. Previous research has shown that Chinese horseshoe bats are a host to many SARS-like viruses and can tolerate these viruses without causing severe symptoms. Experts said there was immunity within these types of viruses, which could prove very important to prevent any contagion in the future.

Princeton University molecular Biologist Sean King and computer scientist Mona Singh carried out the study. As per their analysis, the rodents, which have been used for the study, had diversity and a faster rate of evolution. They said, ”research shows that corona virus like SARS has been infected many times in ancient rats. Due to this, immunity has been built up in them. The researchers also researched the ACE2 receptor of various organisms, which is used by the SARS virus to enter cells.”

In short, the study found that rodents may be the cause of future epidemics for mankind. To prevent future pandemics, Identifying such animals that may have similar protections against such infections is important, the study noted.
