Popular lyricist Bichu Thirumala passes away… The man who contributed songs for over 400 films

Popular lyricist of the Indian film industry Bichu Thirumala has passed away on November 26. He was in critical condition at a private hospital for a few days. He suffered a heart attack and was placed on a ventilator on November 24 in a hospital in the city. He has composed songs for over 400 films.

The noted 80-year-old lyricist who was also a poet from Kerala is known for creating the style of arranging beautiful words in Malayalam film songs. He started his lyricist career with the 1972 Malayalam film Bhaja Govindam. The beauty of the songs which he has written is still in the limelight and garnered attention. The old evergreen songs are still the favorites of many.

All the songs written by Bichu Thirumala are the best super hit songs of all time in Malayalam cinema. In Malayalam cinema, Bichu Thirumala led the group of lyricists who wrote songs for readymade tunes. In 1981, he won the Kerala State Film Award for the best lyricist for the films Thrishna and Thenum Vayambum. Thirumala won the same award for the second time in 1991, for the Rajasenan directed film Kadinjool Kalyanam.

Bichu always paid attention to sorting songs in order and focussed on the fast pace of his writing which was in tune with the context without losing any of its meaning according to the melodies. 

Bichu Thirumala penned the lines for AR Rahman’s one and only Malayalam music for film, Yodha. His first song “Brahma Muhoorthathil” became popular as a “Lalitha Gaanam” or light song since the movie Bhaja Govindam did not see the light of the day. Radio Ceylon used to air the song in the early-1970s. Bichu has also doubled up as music director in a few Malayalam films.

Thirumala went on to become one of the most successful Malayalam lyricists and wrote songs for such notable music directors as Shyam, A.T.Ummer, Raveendran, G.Devarajan, and Ilayaraaja. In a short period of time, he was adept at composing poetic compositions to suit the story context of the film. His wife is Prasanna Kumari, a retired Water Authority employee.
