Zydus Cadila starts supply of ZyCoV-D to govt of India; to be soon available in the private market

Ahmedabad-based Pharmaceutical company Zydus Cadila announced that it has started to supply its Covid-19 vaccine ZyCoV-D to the Government of India. The company is planning to make the needle-free vaccine available in the private market soon.

The drug firm said that the commencement of the supply has been done as per the order placed by the government of India. According to the Ministry of Science and Technology, the world’s first and India’s indigenously developed DNA-based vaccine for Covid-19 is to be given to everyone who is above 12 years of age.

ZyCoV-D is a three-dose vaccine administered intradermally. “The vaccine will be priced at Rs 265 per dose and the applicator being offered at Rs 93 per dose, excluding GST,” Zydus Cadila said. It has been administered using the painless PharmaJet® needle-free system, Tropis®, on day 0, day 28, and day 56.

For this vaccine, the intradermal injection has been done because successful transfection of DNA vaccines requires traveling across both the cell plasma membrane and the nuclear membrane, and using a conventional needle gives poor results and leads to low immunogenicity.

To provide the vaccine for adults, leading workers and vaccinators, they will be given brief training to use the needle-free pharma jet application in real field settings. The company says, three doses of ZyCoV-D should be given at 28-day intervals, each dose including one shot in both hands.
