Supreme Court on February 3 dismissed the plea seeking Postponement of Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering Exam, 2022 (GATE 2022) which is scheduled to be held on 5th, 6th, 12th, and 13th of February, 2022. The top court said that the interference 48 hours before the scheduled examination would create a potential for uncertainty for students.
The Apex Court has said that GATE 2022 will not be postponed and held as per schedule. A bench comprising Justices DY Chandrachud, Surya Kant, and Vikram Nath dismissed the plea and talked about the concerns for students when the postponement is done.
The bench took the matter of Gate 2022 just 2 days before the exam. Justice Chandrachud said that since there are only 48 hours to go, the Bench doesn’t want chaos and uncertainty and cannot play with students’ careers.
We can’t postpone exams. Now everything is opening up. These are academic matters which the authorities must decide. It is dangerous for the Courts to be stepping into this arena. We can’t play with the career of students. You say 9 lakh students are appearing. Some petitioners have approached this court. Many others might have prepared. Now if two days before the exam the Supreme Court stays, it will create chaos”, Justice Chandrachud observed at the outset.
Citing the Covtuid-19 situation of the country, some petitioners submitted the plea seeking the postponement. The petitioners argued that the country is currently suffering from a rising number of covid cases with daily cases touching a record 3 lakh and above. However, as the institute did not respond to their demands, students were expected to take the matter to the courtroom as many allege basic travel problems to the examination centers. Rejecting the petition by the aspirants, SC said there is no postponement of the examination.
