World’s happiest countries for 2022 revealed: United Nations Report

Every year, it is the duty of the United Nations to reveal the top happiest countries in the world to make people aware of how the world looks into life from different perspectives. This year, United Nations has released a report showing the happiest countries for 2022. 

The report contains rankings of national happiness based on several factors, and primarily on the responses by the individuals. The first 5 positions have been held by European countries and especially Nordic countries dominate the list. In the report, income, trust, longevity, social support, independence and generosity are considered in which states the best overall well-being and which is the happiest in the world.

For the fifth consecutive year, the Nordic country, Finland tops the list according to World Happiness Report rankings based largely on life evaluations from the Gallup World Poll. Denmark comes in at No. 2 in this year’s rankings, followed by Iceland at No. 3. Sweden and Norway are seventh and eighth, respectively. Denmark has taken the position with a score of 7.6, whereas Switzerland which takes the 4th position has dropped one ranking from the number in last year’s report. Switzerland is followed by Netherlands and Luxembourg. Number 8 Norway was sixth in last year’s rankings. The Scandinavian country encompasses mountains, glaciers, and deep coastal fjords

Every year, each variable measures a populated-weighted average score on a scale of 0-10 that is tracked over a period of time and further compared with other countries. This year, the report ranked 146 countries. The surveys this year’s happiness rankings were based on were conducted well before the invasion. Ukraine and Russia both fall into the bottom half of world rankings for happiness in the 2022 report, with Ukraine at No. 98 and Russia at No. 80.

Only Austria dropped out from the top 10 list. On the other hand, Afghanistan was ranked as the most unhappy country in the world. It was soon followed by Lebanon and Zimbabwe. UN agency UNICEF estimates one million children under five could die of hunger this winter if not aided. “This (index) presents a stark reminder of the material and immaterial damage that war does to its many victims,” co-author Jan-Emmanuel De Neve said.

However, Canada (No. 15), the United States (No. 16), and the United Kingdom (No. 17) all made it into the top 20. This year, the world happiness report is marking its 10th anniversary considering all aspects of life in the world. India, meanwhile, saw a marginal improvement in its ranking, jumping three spots to 136, from 139 a year ago.

This year, the authors also used data from social media to compare people’s emotions before and after the Kovid-19 epidemic. They found a “strong increase in anxiety and sadness” in 18 countries, but feelings of anger were declining.
