South Korean women are opting to freeze their eggs, What is egg freezing and why it is done, explained

In Korea, women are choosing to freeze their eggs in the near future as part of the move to reduce child-rearing costs and housing in the country. South Korea, being the country with the world’s lowest fertility rate has planned to go with this method called oocyte cryopreservation and it has been widely adopted by unmarried women in the country, SCMP reported.

According to last year’s  CHA Medical Center report, the move by many women both married and unmarried have been taken in order to tackle the huge economic crisis in the country. They believe that the freezing of eggs could help them battle the child-rearing costs and also believe that it would maintain the financial stability of the country.

The competitive surge in the education cost and housing prices have made the women in the country think about their eggs being frozen off. Analysts say more than expected women in the country chose to go for freezing eggs, and the fertility rate has reported at only 0.81 in South Korea last year.

“It is strenuous to raise kids amid the surging household prices and education prices in the country,” says married women in particular. These worries have prompted the women not to choose marriages and to have kids. Despite great government subsidies, the fertility rate in the country remains low compared to that of the rest of the countries in the world.

What is Egg Freezing?

Egg freezing is the process of freezing unfertilized eggs. In this process, unfertilized eggs are harvested from the ovaries. These eggs are frozen in the laboratory and then stored for use at a later stage in life. . The eggs are removed from the ovary in an IVF procedure, slow or fast frozen and then stored at below-freezing temperatures so that they can be melted and fertilized at a later date.

The eggs can then be implanted in the uterus to help the woman get pregnant. This procedure allows women to focus on their careers and other priorities without worrying about their biological clock. It will be approximately 3 weeks to complete the egg freezing cycle and is consistent with the initial stages of the IVF process including 1-2 weeks of birth control pills to temporarily turn off natural hormones.
