18-year-old Odisha girl becomes the first k-pop star from India

It is the dream of millions of teenagers to be part of Korean pop and an Odisha-born 18-year-old Sriya Lenka has made it happen, becoming India’s first K-pop star. 

Sriya Lenka was introduced as a member of the K-pop girl group Blackswan. Blackswan made its debut in 2020. The group now consists of six members – Youngheun, Fatou, Judy, Leia, Sriya, and Gabi. Lenka was selected for the final leg of training in Seoul to become a member of Blackswan last year. She was chosen among 4,000 applicants through a YouTube audition program. Along with Lenka,  Gabriela Dalcin of Brazil was also included in the list. 

Lenka,  an eminent classical dancer Odissi, is known for her incredible covers and sleek dance moves. She is also a staunch yoga practitioner. The selection of this determined girl has been made by Blackswan’s label DR Music via Instagram. “Sriya and Gabi were finally selected as members of black swan after participating in the global audition program for the last 6 months,” DR Music said in a post. The other members of the all-girl band are Young-heun and Judy.

Lenka and Dalcin will be training in Seoul for the next few months for the band’s next release. In the last five months, they underwent a series of intense training sessions that entailed dance lessons, rap, standard vocal training, musical instruments training, language, and personality training.
