Govt withdraws UIDAI’s Aadhar caution note; What is Masked Aadhar card, the steps to download it, Explained

The Central Government on May 29 has revoked the directive not to share Aadhaar card information. The Union IT Ministry has come out with an explanation as to why it is likely to be misunderstood. The centre has said that one should only use the masked copies in order to control fraud. The decision from the central government has warned people against sharing a photocopy of their Aadhaar card with any organization as it can be misused and asked to use a masked Aadhar Card. 

On May 29th advised the Aadhaar cardholders to exercise normal prudence in using and sharing their UIDAI Aadhaar numbers and withdrew its earlier press release in the view of the possibility of the misinterpretation of the Press Release.

What is a Masked Aadhar Card ?

The Masked Aadhar Card is a special version of the Aadhaar card that was introduced by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) last year to protect Aadhaar card holders from misuse by wrong people. With masked Aadhar, the users will be able to make their personal digits invisible to the public, only the last four digits of their Aadhaar number visible.

Difference between Regular and Masked Aadhar Card

In the regular Aadhar Card, all the 12 digits of the cardholder will be visible to the public. Whoever, take the card can have a look at the complete 12 digits of the respective card. However, the masked cards allow cardholders to hide the first eight digits of the card and to display only the last four digits. The extra protection layer masks the Aadhaar number in the downloaded e-version.

Steps to download the cards

UIDAI is the official website where one can download their masked Aadhar. 

  1. Visit UIDAI’s official website https://myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in/. -Click on login and enter your Aadhaar number and captcha code and then click on ‘Send OTP’.
  2. You will get an OTP on your mobile number that is linked with Aadhaar, enter the OTP and click on Login. 
  3. Go to the services section and click on ‘Download Aadhaar’.
  4. Go to review your demographic data section and select the option- ‘Do want a masked Aadhaar’?
  5. Click on Proceed to Download
