Former Japan PM Shinzo Abe shot dead; Here are the other top world leaders who were assassinated over the past years

The fatal shooting of former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has brought the assassination of several heads of state and high-ranking leaders into the global spotlight including Indian leaders. Former Japanese prime minister Shinzo Abe was shot and killed by his rebel man on July 8, while he was campaigning for a parliamentary election in the Nara region. 

The latest gunshot that occured in the country is shocking entire Japan. It is because for two reasons- it was the ex-PM who died after a gunshot and the incident happened in a country where there exist the safest gun control laws. However, the incident has reminded the entire world to take a look back at the previous assasination of the other top world leaders. 

  1. The 16th President of the United States, Abraham Lincoln who served as the president from March 4, 1861 to April 15, 1865, was shot and killed when he was attending a play at the Ford’s Theatre in Washington, DC.
  1. John F Kennedy, fondly referred to by his nickname ‘JFK’ was the 35th president of the US from 1961 until his assassination on November 22, 1963, in Dallas. 
  1. Martin Luther King Jr, the leader of America’s civil rights movement was assassinated on April 4, 1968. He was fatally shot at the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, Tennessee. He was rushed to St Joseph’s Hospital, where he died while undergoing treatment. 
  1. The leader of India’s independence movement and Father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhi was shot thrice in the chest on January 30, 1948. Gandhi died on the spot. The shooting happened when he was attending a prayer meeting in New Delhi.
  1. India’s ‘Iron Lady’  and India’s first female PM Indira Gandhi was assassinated by two of her security guards on 31 October 1984 When she had just stepped out of her residence. She was taken to AIIMS but doctors could not revive the then PM of India.
  1. Rajiv Gandhi, the son of Indira Gandhi, who took office after her mother was assassinated was also a victim of an assassination. He was killed by a suicide bomber on May 21, 1991 while campaigning for the Sriperumbudur Lok Sabha Congress candidate. 
  1. Rahman, the first President and later the Prime Minister of Bangladesh from April 1971 until his assassination, was killed along with most of his family members. Bangladesh president Ziaur Rahman was assassinated in Chittagong in May 1981.

  1. The two-time PM of Pakistan, Benazir Bhutto was assassinated on 27 December 2007 in Rawalpindi, Pakistan. She was campaigning ahead of the January 2008 elections. She was shot after a political rally and a suicide bomb exploded shortly after the shooting.
  1.  Liaquat Ali Khan-served as the first PM of Pakistan was shot twice in the chest while he was addressing a gathering of 100,000 at Company Bagh (Company Gardens), Rawalpindi. The police immediately shot the presumed murderer who was later identified as professional assassin Said Akbar.
  2. In Sri Lanka, Ranasinghe Premadasa, who was president between 1989 to 1993, was assassinated in 1993.
