Indian actor and filmmaker Pratap Pothen passed away at the age of 69. He was found dead in a flat in Chennai on July 15 morning. However, no further information about the cause of his death is unavailable.
Pratap Pothen has acted in about 100 films. He has acted in Malayalam, Tamil, and Telugu as well as Hindi films. Besides acting, Pothen made his mark in the industry as a scriptwriter, director, and producer.
He debuted in director Bharatan’s 1978 movie Aaravam. Some of his popular Malayalam movies include Thakaram, Aarohanam, Panneer Pushpangal, Thanmathra, 22 Female Kottayam and Bangalore Days. Pratap’s last released movie was Mammootty’s Malayalam movie CBI 5. However, the last movie he acted in was ‘Barroz’ starring Mohanlal which is yet to be released.
Pratap Pothen began to direct films in 1985. His first film was Meendum Oru Kaathai Kathai- a story of a mentally unwell couple – that won a national award. His subtlety as an actor and a director has been his forte. In an era when loud acting and innovations were not in vogue, Prathap teamed up with Kamal Hassan in Vettri Vizhaa. It was the first time that a steady cam was used in a Tamil film.
Prathap married actress Radhika in 1985 and got separated in 1986. He then remarried Amala Sathyanath in 1990. The couple has a daughter. Their marriage too ended after 22 years, in 2012
