Kochi : Senior Congress leader and MP representing Wayanad, MI Shanavaz, has died at a private hospital after being critical in its Intensive Care Unit for days now. The end came at Dr Rela Institute of Medical early Wednesday at 1.30 am. He was 67.
Shanavaz has been ailing following pancreatic surgery earlier. He was admitted to the hospital on 1 Nov from liver complications and underwent a transplant the next day.
The lawmaker’s condition was critical owing to inflammations.
Shanavas was elected to Lok Sabha in 2009 and again in 2014.
He was one of the three newly-appointed working presidents of the Congress in the state. In his passing, the state Congress loses one of its trusted and prominent Muslim leaders.
His body will be brought to Noorjahan Manzil near North Railway station in Kochi by noon and cremation will take place at Thottathumpadi mosque in the city on Thursday 10 am.
More than three decades after the anti-Sikh riots, a Delhi court today sentenced one of the two men, found guilty of killing two men, during the violence in Delhi.
The court had convicted Naresh Sherawat and Yashpal Singh last Wednesday, 14 Nov in the murder of Hardev Singh and Avtar Singh in Delhi’s Mahipalpur locality.
The quantum sentence after final arguments were pronounced in Tihar Jail today, due to security concerns and attack on the convicts on the premises of Delhi court earlier.
Naresh has been sentenced with life in prison while Yashpal was handed down capital punishment.
Both men were found guilty of criminal conspiracy, unlawful assembly, rioting, weapon possession, attempt to murder and murder.
The murder case was lodged based on complaint filed by Santokh Singh, brother of Hardev Singh. The Delhi Police had closed the case in 1994 citing lack of evidence but a Special Investigation Team(SIT) reopened the case under directions from the Supreme Court.
186 cases are now being probed by the SIT, and today’s convictions is first in the batch.
The Case On Nov 1, 1984, a mob of 800-1000 armed men carrying lathis, iron rods, stones and kerosene attacked four Sikh shopkeepers in Mahipalpur.
The grocers shut their shops and rushed to their rented homes. The mob looted and set the shops on fire and as panicky Sikhs sought shelter in a small room, Avtar Singh reached there .
The mob entered the place and assaulted the people there. All five were then thrown from the first floor.
Police arrived at the scene and shifted the victims to Safdarjung hospital, where Hardev Singh and Avtar Singh were declared dead on arrival.
The 1984 Anti-Sikh Riots
The 1984 anti-Sikh riots were triggered by assassination of then prime minister Indira Gandhi, by her Sikh bodyguards.
Approximately 2,800 people died across India with 2,100 victims reported from Delhi alone.
Indira’s assassination came after she ordered the Indian Army to raid the Golden Temple and eliminated Sikh pro-independence insurgents.

The Maoist infested state had witnessed a 76.28 percent turnout for 18 seats in the first phase earlier.

The votes will be counted on 11 Dec, when results of four other states – Mizoram, Madhya Pradesh, Telangana an Rajasthan – too will be declared.
Kozhikode : A politically motivated counter attack in Kozhikode happened with explosion of steel bomb at RSS worker’s house, in wee hours today in Kozhikode.
The Right activist Sudeesh said the attack took place a little after midnight yesterday when a bomb hurled at his house broke window panes and traumatised the family inside.
Sudeesh had earlier headed a gang that attacked CPM district secretary P Mohanan’s house and daughter-in-law on hartal day Saturday.
On that day, P Mohanan’s son Julius Nikthas(33) and wife Saniyo Manomi(25) were stopped in their car by RSS hartal supporters. The couple were allegedly dragged out of the car and beaten up. Saniyo was kicked repeatedly on her chest, she claimed. Locals and party activists later took the couple to govt Taluk Hospital.
Then again, when Julius and Saniyo were being shifted to the Medical College, hartal protesters accosted them at Naduvannur and harassed the couple.
Based on their complaint a case was registered and Sudeesh, whose house was attacked today, was first to be arrested.
Sabarimala : KSRTC MD Tomin Thachankary faces legal tangle as Trvancore Devaswom Board(TDB) came out against him for handing over land leased by it, for commercial purpose.
The land in question at Nilakkal, was allotted to KSRTC purely for conducting service in the ongoing Madalam pilgrimage season. Thachankary on 7 Nov invited tender for 150 sq ft plot and found a taker who shelled out Rs 9 lakh, to set up and run a tea shop there.
Thachankary claimed the intent was to provide tea facility to staff there.
With Devaswom now mulling legal proceedings, KSRTC is trying to resolve the situation by returning the advance amount received from the bidder and scrap the deal.

32-year-old Chandra Mukhi is a transgender activist and will contest on CPM led-Bahujan Left Front(BLF) ticket from Gosha Mahal constituency.
She is pitted against senior Congress leader Mukhesh Goud and BJP leader T Raja Singh.
“Nowadays, power is enjoyed only by a few sections and I want to change that. So, if elected to power, I will address issues relating to transgenders and child labour, which is plaguing the constituency,” she said.
Born as Rajesh, Chandramukhi underwent sex-change procedure 15 years ago and has been living with transgender community since.
Ina high-profile arrest, the auto industry’s leading figure and Nissan chairman , Carlos Ghosn, was taken into custody by Japanese prosecutors, for swindling money from Nissan and other financial misconduct on his part.
At the time of arrest, Ghosn was serving as chief executive of Renault, chairman of Nissan and chairman of the board at Mitsubishi.
Ghosn was booked along with representative director Greg Kelly for failing to declare $44 million on Nissan’s security reports submitted over five years since 2011.
Meanwhile Nissan said it will cooperate with Tokyo prosecutors and their investigations into Ghosn after a whistle-blower tipped that the executive was misrepresenting his salary and using company assets for his personal purpose.
